Thank you, this is super helpful. I am also running a lit mag and something else that we sometimes reject a submission for is that it's too graphic (either sexually or violently) for the magazine. It's not that it's not well written, it's that it doesn't fit the audience we're reaching.
Hi Evelyn - Luckily, I don't see many submissions employing graphic (sexual or violent) content. However, I do sometimes see racist, misogynistic, or discriminatory content presented without challenge. This phrase, "without challenge," is something really helpful I got from The Masters Review readers' guide. While I realize violence and bigotry are both prevalent in our society, I was having a hard time figuring out why in some pieces it felt indulgent and/or gratuitous and left me with a giant ick. This idea of these things being presented without challenge really helped me.
Wow that is a really good way to think about it. I also wondered why in some cases I felt like the piece was well done even if it had content like that where with other it (as you put it) left me with the ick. I like that phrase a lot!
Oh, hey there! I actually recommended that one of the writers I work with submit to you and she did! Although it wasn't ultimately accepted, you gave her encouraging feedback and it gave her the hope she needed to keep submitting ❤️

You are so intent upon satisfying your magazine-subscribers' taste that you overlook raw artistic genius. Or do I mean genii? You know what I mean.
