In addition to Duotrope and Chill Subs, one could use The Submission Grinder as well. While Duotrope has better data for literary works, Submission Grinder has better data for genre work.

Best to use all three to exploit their unique features, e.g.:

Duotrope has editor interviews explaining what they looking for

Chill Subs has industry rankings

Submission Grinder let's you filter by journals that nominate for awards (e.g., Pushcart) and its awesome 'Response Timeline' graphs.

If you want a ranking of the journals or if you want the data in a spreadsheet form to sort and filter your way, the best place to start is Brecht de Poortere's sheet: https://www.brechtdepoortere.com/

I've been using Submittable's search, not the best, and I recently discovered Chill Subs. The one thing I like a lot about Submittable is that it keeps a record of what I sent where with the date.

Tim, Chill Subs has a tracker, too. It’s just not automatic, like Submittable.

Duotrope also offers a tracker, but it's manual entry like Chill Subs. However, Duotrope's tracker does provide an insane level of detail about your submissions that the others don't.

Hi Tim - It is nice that Submittable automatically logs your submissions for you. The drawback, of course, is if you submit anywhere else that doesn't use Submittable (whether it's via email or another submission manager) you'll still need to track those manually somehow.

Hi, we’re a journal dedicated to uplifting non-native English writers and we just released our 14th issue today! Our submissions for In Conversation pieces are always open though ;) And we host bi-annual open calls for Spring and Fall issues.

I recently came across Chill Subs, and while I find it helpful and friendly, it was a bit intimidating since I'm just starting to try submitting. Your post really helped me out!

I’ve heard of Duotrope, but I use Poets and Writers or the Poetry Market book. I think I’ll give Chill Subs a try though😀

Chill Subs definitely sounds like something I’m gonna try to use. I’ve been using Submittable, the Grinder, Duotrope, but they’re all missing something

I'm a big fan of Chill Subs and ponyed up the money for the extras. I'm constantly using their search features to find places to submit to.
